Fall 2008: Berlin

Our long weekend in Berlin was fantastic- even though our timing sucked: first Kim had to cancel her trip to Berlin due to illness and we couldn’t meet up (I hope she is doing A LOT better now!) and then Kathrin, my friend that we were staying with, also had gotten sick on Wednesday and we couldn’t do all the things together that we would have wanted to (Gute Besserung also to her!) But  otherwise we had a great time and made the best of it! We arrived on the Kudamm around 4 pm on Thursday afternoon where we had our first Döner (MUST HAVE food in Berlin!), did some shopping and checked out the Helmut Newton photo exhibition. Kathrin then picked us up and we cooked a nice dinner together at her place. It was great having the time for a lengthy girl talk wit her again!

(J used the time to repair her laptop!) On Friday Kathrin had to work, so J and I had a little breakfast together and then went to the museum “The story of Berlin”. Friday and Saturday were supposed to be the grey bad-weather days of our trip so that we planned to visit some museums on those days. The Story of Berlin is alright, it gives a good overview over the turbulent history of the city. We also took a guided tour of a nuclear shelter, which was creepy and scary especially considering the fact that it was built in the 1970’s – the time when I was born.

Later on we had a coffee in Berlins most famous Coffee-house “Café Kranzler” and strolled a bit around in the KaDeWe. Back at Kathrins place we cooked an awesome 3 course dinner  consisting of pumpkin cream soup, Rösti and filet of beef and Rote Gruetze for dessert and had a great, chatty evening at home. Saturday started off with a wonderful and lengthy German breakfast (me indulging into Mettbrötchen!!!) after which Jörgen and I went to the German museum of Technology that especially J wanted to visit since a long time!

But even I wasn’t disappointed AT ALL, the technical aspects were nicely packaged into a historical perspective, which made the museum very pleasant even for a not so technically interested person like me. When we were through the museum it was already dark but we really wanted to stroll around the places that give you a bit of Berlin -feeling like the Reichstag, Brandenburg gate, Unter den Linden etc. which we did.

We also had to have a Currywurst and were able to check out the new Central station.

Back in Kathrins hood Willmersdorf we went out for dinner in a typical Berlin restaurant that had all the typical Berlin food on the menu and then continued the evening with a few more beers or Berliner Weisse in a pub. Sunday started the same way as Saturday with a great breakfast and this time even lots of sunshine! We therefore planned to spend the afternoon in the park around the Charlottenburg castle – a great place to enjoy the fall foliage!

But in the moment we had parked the car it started raining :-( Oh well we still walked around a bit and then drove back into the city where we warmed ourselves up with a Gingerbread Latte at Starbucks! What can be nicer on a Sunday afternoon than sitting there in a cozy armchair listening to jazz and watching the people outside? Not so much in my opinion! On our way back to Kathrins we picked up some sushi at her favourite sushi place and enjoyed that before we had to leave for the “Wise guys” concert.

Poor Kathrin – who had been looking forward to this concert for months- felt too weak to join though :-( but at least we found someone that bought her ticket. I was a little afraid that J might not overly enjoy the concert since you really have to understand the lyrics but en contraire: he loved it and even suggested getting the CD! And I agree: it was a great concert and a great last night in Berlin!

Did J write the lyrics to that song?
