Summer 2004: Northern Italy

After a smooth flight to Bergamo we picked up our rental car, drove to our hotel and literally fell into our bed. The next morning we had a wonderful breakfast on the terrace of the hotel and then started our trip north towards the mountains. We passed lake Garda where we had a nice lunch and arrived in the Dolomites in the late afternoon. The weather wasn’t the greatest unfortunately. For the next day we had planned to explore the mountains a bit more and decided to take the cable car to the top of one of them. The feeling to be on top of the clouds was amazing!

We spent another day exploring Southern Tyrol and then hit the road towards Venice. The atmosphere in that town is so special. Magical. I loved it! We went sight-seeing and had a few good meals and glasses of wine watching the sun set over this beautiful city.

On Wednesday it was time to leave and we decided to check out San Marino on our way to Tuscany. It really is such a tourist trap! Just kitsch stores and nothing but kitsch stores! At least the view was nice.

We left the place pretty fast and arrived in our wonderful holiday home in Tuscany early in the evening. The place was owned by a German couple that is running a winery there. It was such a wonderful relaxing place. We spent the mornings and early afternoons by the pool as it was way too hot to go sight-seeing. When it cooled of after 3 o’clock we went to see  a different town every day. Florence, Siena, San Geminiani and the countryside of the Southern Tuscany. We had such a wonderful relaxing time.

After a week in Tuscany we went for a last stop in Cinque Terre! What a beautiful spot! On the first day we rented a sea kayak and went down the absolutely gorgeous coast line. So awesome. For the next day we decided to hike the Via dell Amore through the five coastal villages of Cinque Terre. Unfortunately is was so unbearably hot that J got overheated and we needed to break off our hike. We met a very nice American lady who invited us to her terrace where we had a great chat while cooling off. The views were so amazing!
